Surviving the Game Jam: Lessons from Dark Conflicts
Game jams test skill, creativity, and resilience, and Dark Conflicts pushed me to my limits. Over a few weeks, I tackled technical hurdles, design challenges, and the constant race against time.
The Challenge: I set out to create a top-down action-adventure where players navigate three paths and activate a gate to escape. Implementing a teleportation mechanic was key, but balancing it with level design proved tricky.
Technical Hurdles: Getting teleportation to work smoothly in Unreal Engine 5 was a challenge. After struggling with collision detection and logic constraints, multiple iterations refined the mechanic, deepening my understanding of UE5’s Blueprints.
Design Takeaways: Designing three distinct paths in a confined space taught me the power of subtle visual cues over explicit instructions. This reinforced my passion for level design and problem-solving.
Final Thoughts: I gained invaluable experience in UE5 Blueprints, rapid prototyping, and designing within constraints. More importantly, I proved I could push through creative and technical roadblocks under pressure.
